Recently I had a bit of an inconsistent lunch at Klein Joostenberg Bistro, being unaware that chef Christophe Dehosse is now focusing on his new restaurant in Stellenbosch. Hurtling down the highway to escape the mixed-use mess that is Kraaifontein only accelerates your arrival in the Badlands, home to Klein Joostenberg Bistro. After that a web of roads reaches out to those other lands, the Winelands.
The Winelands are a picture postcard of vineyards nestled beneath jagged mountains. The Badlands are Free State flat. (more…)

Damn. Can’t find that tongue in cheek article claiming the only three French speakers in the poncy ‘village’ of Franschhoek are black Africans from the Congo. It had me chuckling to myself about the nouveau French culture among the pale socialites and millionaire hobby wine makers in this town. Franschhoek may have been founded by an earlier breed of refugees, the French Huguenots, over 300 years ago but the language was lost in a (more…)
